The nature of the production process of contact lenses means that it is imperative that the contact lens is inspected as part of the manufacturing quality. Injection moulding is commonly used in the production of soft contact lenses. To shape the lenses, the material is heated to its melting point and then injected into a mould. When the substance hardens, it adopts the form of a contact lens. The cleaning of this lens requires the removal of some unnecessary material, and ultimately the final lens will need to be inspected for shape, inclusions, mould defects and surface inspection.
Hydrogel is the material of choice for most soft lenses. Because of its high water content, this polymer improves oxygen delivery to the eye. A very high percentage of water can be found in some types of soft contact lenses. However, some individuals find it bothersome as adding more water also makes the lens bigger. Because of the reduction in water, the lens can be made thinner and more comfortable.
Silicone hydrogel soft lenses are more recent. With these modern materials, oxygen transmission can be improved without increasing lens size. Compared to rigid gas-permeable lenses, soft contact lenses are more pleasant for the wearer and require less adjustment time.
